“Domain transfer” can describe two different processes: moving a domain between registrars, or changing the legal registrant. A premium domain purchase usually requires a change of registrant and may also involve a registrar move.
Registrar transfer
A registrar transfer moves management of the domain from one accredited registrar to another. The registrant may remain the same. The current and incoming registrars provide the required instructions and authorisation steps.
Change of registrant
A sale changes control from the seller to the buyer. The incoming registrant may need to meet .IE eligibility and naming requirements. Ask the chosen registrar which documents and forms are required before completion.
Prepare before payment
Agree who starts each step, where the domain will land, how eligibility is checked, when payment is released and how delays or rejection are handled. Keep registrar correspondence and the signed agreement with the transaction records.
After completion
Verify the registrant record, renewal date, nameservers, DNS records, account access, multi-factor authentication and renewal billing. Changing nameservers can interrupt websites and email, so plan DNS migration separately when services are already live.
Get authoritative instructions
Procedures can change. Treat your registrar and the official .IE registry as the authoritative sources for current forms, evidence and processing requirements.
